Arkansas Repertory Theatre presents a special educational tour of One Ninth, a dynamic new play by Arkansan Spirit Trickey.A powerful exploration of human dignity and racial conflict as seen through the eyes of teenagers, One Ninth features the story of the playwright’s mother, Minnijean Brown Trickey, one of the students from The Little Rock Nine who integrated Little Rock Central High School in 1957. Building upon a backdrop of youthful innocence, courage and anticipation, the production incorporates the sounds and styles of the 1950s with a timeless investigation into the world of teens confronting societal pressures and struggling to segue into the adult world. Poignant and hopeful, One Ninth offers an insider’s look at the 1957 desegregation crisis and race relations that continue to impact Arkansas and the nation’s evolving population and ongoing cultural tensions. In addition to Little Rock performances, the One Ninth company will be in residence in 10 communities across Arkansas performing the play and conducting workshops for students. The play engages a group of community actors at each venue to perform with The Rep’s professional cast of six actors. Public performances at each venue will also include community conversations about the play, the 1957 desegregation crisis and the play’s themes, which remain pertinent to Arkansas and the nation’s evolving population and ongoing cultural tensions. This project is made possible through support from the Arkansas Arts Council (an agency of the Department of Arkansas Heritage), Fred Darragh Foundation, Robert S. Lindsey Foundation for One Ninth study guides, The Hearst Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Arts.
