Education at The Rep proudly announces FALL CLASSES at The Rep, running September 10 - November 12. With classes in acting, musical theatre, improvisation, Shakespeare, theatre dance, tap dance, movement, and technical theatre for students ages kindergarten through adult, The Rep provides a pre-professional and encouraging environment for artists of all abilities to learn and grow. With new material for every student, every semester, classes can be taken repeatedly!

Full and partial need-based scholarships are available upon application and due by August 27. Scholarships forms and instructions are found at the bottom of each class page.

Acting and Creative Movement | K - 2nd Grades

In this class, young actors will use their voices, bodies, and imaginations as tools to create new characters, atmospheres, and follow a narrative. With exercises and activities rooted in creative play and inspired by poetry, students will gain confidence, sensory awareness, focus, improvisational skills, and the ability to collaborate within a group. Share what you’ve learned in an informal showcase for friends and family.

Discover the fun and fundamentals of musical theatre technique by integrating acting, singing, and simple choreography in the development of Broadway repertoire. Students will be introduced to proper vocal technique, body awareness, acting through movement, and how to work within an ensemble to tell a story. Apply your skills in an informal showcase for friends and family.

Build on the fundamentals of musical theatre technique by integrating acting, singing, and basic choreography in the development of a musical revue. Expand on principles of vocal technique, music theory, knowledge of Broadway repertoire, expression of character through movement, and learn how to elevate performances by making specific and unique choices on stage. Intro to Theatrical Lighting | Grades 6th-12th

Learn the basics of theatrical lighting and design in this hands-on course for middle school and high school students. With an introduction to lighting equipment, color theory, cueing, and programming, students will learn from The Rep’s professional staff using The Rep’s state-of-the-art equipment. At the end of the semester, students will try their hands at designs of their very own, creating, programming, and cueing lights for the final showcase of The Rep’s Teen Ensemble. No previous experience is required.

Improvisation | 9th-12th Grades

Enhance your ability to live in the moment, think on your feet, and open your mind to collaboration by saying “yes!” through the study of improvisation. Students will leave feeling more confident, creative, and adaptable as a person and onstage. Through fun and imagination games and exercises, students will learn how to create memorable characters quickly, explore onstage relationships, and develop the storytelling tools needed for long-form improv.

Teen Ensemble | 9th-12th Grades - AUDITION ONLY

TEEN ENSEMBLE is The Rep’s audition-only performance class featuring the top high school-age singers, dancers, and actors in the area. This small company of pre-professional actors meets weekly for advanced training and rehearsals, diving into challenging musical theatre repertoire and scene work in the development of an original showcase.

 

Auditions will be held by appointment only on Sunday, August 19 from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. Email akimmell@therep.org for a time slot. Students must prepare a 16-32 bar cut of a song (preferably musical theatre repertoire) with sheet music and a 1-minute monologue. Spaces are limited.

Get moving in this fun, high energy dance class focusing on Broadway-style choreography. Learn jazz and theater basics through warm-ups and practice picking up choreography in theatre combinations. Make some noise in this course that builds upon the foundation of tap dance technique. With warm ups and drills focusing on tap dance vocabulary, clarity of sound, rhythmic variety, aesthetically quality, and the beginnings of improvisation, students will apply their skills to rhythm and show tap choreography. This class is not for beginners. Students must have a basic tap dance vocabulary including shuffles, flaps, riffles, paradiddles, drawbacks, etc. Tap shoes required.

Movement for the Actor | Adult

The body is the actor’s most essential tool. Through activities and exercises centered on awareness, imagination, physical control, and emotional connection, we will explore ways to create dynamic characters using the stage as a canvas and movement as the paint.  This class is inspired by the teachings of world-renowned theatre artists Jacques LeCoq and Jerzy Grotowski, including mask and clown techniques as well as commedia dell’arte. Actors will leave feeling more grounded with new tools to fully embody a character, confidently make big and bold choices, and command the space. This course is designed for all levels of actors and all levels of movement ability.

Shakespeare for All | Adult

Get down and dirty with the most produced playwright in the world--William Shakespeare. Producing Artistic Director of Arkansas Shakespeare Theatre Rebekah Scallet will teach foundational text analysis skills and performance approaches to the work of the Bard, from the ins and outs of scanning verse to using physicality to inhabit and communicate Shakespeare's great words and ideas. The class will focus on both scene and monologue work, and will include tips on Shakespeare auditions.
