This month-long semester includes training in musical theatre, acting, shakespeare, improvisation, theatre dance, tap dance, and stage combat for students ages K-adult. Classes below are listed by age. Scholarship information can be found at the bottom of each class page.

 

Intro to Musical Theatre | K - 2nd Grades

Discover the fundamentals of musical theatre technique by integrating acting, singing, and simple choreography in the development of Broadway repertoire. With a focus on proper vocal technique, body awareness, acting through movement, and how to work within an ensemble to tell a story, students will apply their skills by presenting a song for friends and family on the last day of class.

Time: Tuesdays from 4:30 - 5:30 p.m.

Intro to Improv: “In Character” | 3rd - 5th Grades

This fun class will provide students with the fundamental techniques to explore and create new characters. Through imaginative improvisational games and exercises that enhance spontaneity, creativity, and specificity, students will dive into the physical and vocal adjustments that occur when embodying a character. Young actors will leave feeling more confident to take risks and make big choices on stage and off.

Theatre Dance | 3rd - 5th Grades

Learn jazz and theatre basics in this high-energy dance class focusing on Broadway-style choreography. Beginning with warm ups and across the floor exercises, students will hone their through warm-ups and practice picking up choreography in theatre combinations. Learn how to fill your movement with meaning and unleash the fun in expressing yourself through dance! This class is best suited for beginning dancers or actors who move.

Time: Thursdays from 4:30 - 5:45 p.m.

Shaking up Shakespeare | 6th - 8th Grades

Have no fear, Shakespeare is here! This fun, high-energy course takes a playful, introductory look at the language of the greatest playwright in history and gives young actors the foundational tools needed to decipher, demystify, and perform beginning Shakespeare text. With a focus on meter, voice and speech, and integrating movement with the language - young actors will enjoy approaching the classic literature with a 21st century attitude.

Theatre Dance | 6th - 8th Grades

Intro to Stage Combat| 9th - 12th Grades

In this class, high school actors will learn the basics of unarmed stage combat. Working in a fun, but safe, environment, students will learn basic punches, grabs, throws, and proper footwork from certified stage combat instructor Kevin Brown.

Theatre Dance Audition Preparation | 8th Grade - Adult

This fun, high-energy dance class will focus on musical theatre dance audition tips and techniques. Each week, dancers will learn important dance vocabulary and hone their ability to quickly pick up and perform choreography in a variety of musical theatre dance styles. Join us to get a weekly workout, learn how to fill your movement with character, and step into your next dance audition feeling confident.

Beginning Tap Dance - Part II | 8th Grade - Adult

Make some noise in this introductory course building upon the foundation of tap dance technique. With warm ups and drills focusing on tap dance vocabulary, clarity of sound, and rhythmic variety, use your new skills in learning beginning tap choreography. (Tap shoes required.)

This class is an extension of Beginning Tap at The Rep. New students with a very basic understanding of tap steps are invited to join. If you have questions, please email akimmell@therep.org.

Intermediate Tap | 8th Grade - Adult

Make some noise in this course that builds upon the foundation of tap dance technique. With warm ups and drills focusing on tap dance vocabulary, clarity of sound, rhythmic variety, aesthetically quality, and the beginnings of improvisation, students will apply their skills to rhythm and show tap choreography. This class is not for beginners. Students must have a basic tap dance vocabulary including shuffles, flaps, riffles, paradiddles, drawbacks, etc. Tap shoes required.

Time: Tuesdays from 5:45 - 6:45 p.m.

Improvisational State of Mind | Adults

Enhance your professional and personal skills through the study of Fundamental Improvisation. Under the philosophy of "Yes! And...", students will learn how to heighten their ability to listen to understand, build relationships through an "attitude of gratitude",  and enhance their cognitive skills by building a community of support by playing Improv and Theater games. Students will leave feeling self-confidence in their ability to be adaptable at home, in the workplace, or on stage. No previous experience necessary! Bring water and a notebook if you wish.

Advanced Musical Theatre Audition Preparation | Adult

Work with The Rep's Casting Director Peter Mensky in an advanced-level musical theatre audition preparation class. Learn about the business of acting, both locally and in NYC, discuss audition etiquette and techniques, and workshop audition-cut songs in a masterclass-style setting. Participating actors will leave confident with fresh material ready to use in their next audition.

Adult actors should come prepared with two 16-32 bar audition songs with sheet music. An accompanist will be provided.

Previous training and musical theatre audition experience required. This is not an introductory class.
